July 26-28, 2002 - An Exhibition of Retablos and Bultos of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico honoring Saint Juan Diego
May 12-14, 2004 - Steve Loza, UCLA Ethnomusicologist and Professor, while Director of the UNM Arts of the Americas Institute, UNM College of Fine Arts organized the "Towards a Theory for Religion as Art: Guadalupe, Orishas & Sufi" Conference.. In June 2009 UNM Press published twenty three of the essays in a volume titled Religion as Art, Guadalupe, Orishas, and Sufi. The first essay by Historian Francisco Miranda Godínez quotes from the beautiful poem Nican Mopohu, and the last footnote in the final essay by law professor Timothy A. Canova quotes from Barak Obama’s Presidential nomination acceptance speech, August 28, 2008. In between are articles concerning Orishas and Sufi. The book is available from UNM Press, Amazon.com, and other book sellers. “If there is to be true globalization, it’s going to happen through the arts, not economics or politicization.”
